David Daren, PEng
Senior Crash Reconstruction Engineer

B.Sc..Mechanical Engineering 1988
University of Alberta – Edmonton

Since 1988, Mr. Daren has been involved in the investigation, analysis and engineering reconstruction of over 2,000 automobile, auto-pedestrian, truck, bicycle and motorcycle collisions. As an expert, he specializes in crash reconstruction, vehicle dynamics/loss of control, and Event Data Recorder (EDR) analysis, and has provided expert testimony in California Superior Court, British Columbia Supreme Court and Alberta Provincial Court and Court of Queen’s Bench. Mr. Daren is an active member of SAE International and the California Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialist (CA2RS). Mr. Daren is also a registered member of the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

Mr. Daren earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1987 and completed several graduate level engineering courses in dynamics of structures, fracture mechanics, and close-range photogrammetry. Mr. Daren’s reconstructionist career spans beyond three decades, providing thorough expertise in a wide range of vehicle generations and scientifically accepted analysis methodologies from simple momentum analyses to more complex crash reconstruction methodologies including crush-energy-restitution analysis, vehicle dynamics evaluations, and vehicle rollovers. Additionally, Mr. Daren utilizes computer-based collision simulators and modern technical computing suites to forensically interrogate collisions.

Engineering responsibilities include rapid responses, physical inspections of collision sites and light to heavy-duty vehicles, and the systematic collection and analysis of test data, performance data, naturalistic data, and EDR data to reconstruct transportation collisions. He is also experienced in the analysis of vehicle systems and performance, including occupant restraints components, drivetrain and suspension components. He is knowledgeable in performing traffic signal phase timing analysis, visibility studies, and incident reenactments. Having dedicated his engineering career between Canada and California, Mr. Daren possesses a level of collision reconstruction intuition for nearly all weather conditions regarding vehicle dynamics, loss of control conditions, and visibility related weather issues.
